WhatsApp Template Rejected? The 9 Real Reasons and How to Fix Each

Why Meta rejects WhatsApp message templates, what each rejection reason actually means, and the exact edit that gets the template approved on resubmission.

Almost every WhatsApp template rejection comes down to one of nine causes, and eight of them are a two-minute edit.

Quick answer: The most common WhatsApp template rejection is category mismatch: promotional copy submitted as a utility template. The next most common are variable problems (a placeholder at the very start or end of the body, or missing sample values) and content Meta restricts outright. Meta shows the rejection reason against the template, so the fix is almost never guesswork.

1. Category mismatch, the single biggest cause

Meta has three template categories: marketing, utility and authentication. Utility templates must follow something the customer did, such as an order, a booking or an account event. Marketing templates promote, and carry the highest per-message rate.

Because utility is cheaper, businesses submit promotions as utility templates. Meta catches it. Either the template is rejected or the category is silently corrected, and repeated attempts damage account standing.

The fix is to be honest about the category. If the message would exist without a transaction, it is marketing.

2 and 3. Variable placement and missing samples

A template body cannot begin or end with a variable. "{{1}}, your order shipped" is rejected; "Hi {{1}}, your order shipped" is fine. Two adjacent variables with nothing between them are also rejected.

Every variable needs a sample value at submission. Reviewers read the sample, not your intent, so a sample of "x" invites rejection where "Asha Sharma" does not.

  • Never start or end the body with {{1}}
  • Never place two variables next to each other
  • Provide realistic sample values, not placeholders
  • Keep the variable count proportionate to the message length

4 to 6. Content Meta restricts

Some content is refused regardless of category: anything implying the recipient has a medical condition, gambling and certain financial products depending on market, and copy that reads as misleading or as impersonating another business.

Aggressive promotional language also fails more often than teams expect. Copy that sounds like SMS spam is treated like SMS spam.

  • Health claims or anything implying a diagnosis
  • Restricted verticals, which vary by country
  • Misleading urgency or fake scarcity
  • Any wording that implies you are a different brand

7 to 9. Formatting, buttons and duplication

Header text has a hard character limit and cannot carry rich formatting. Buttons need valid, reachable URLs, and a dynamic website button still needs a working base URL at review time.

Submitting a template that duplicates an existing approved one in the same account is also rejected, which usually happens when several people manage templates without checking the library first.

How to resubmit without burning the account

Read the rejection reason on the template rather than guessing, make one targeted change, and resubmit. Repeated blind resubmissions of the same content are the fastest way to attract manual review on everything you send afterwards.

Approval is usually minutes. Meta allows up to 24 hours, and anything flagged for manual review takes longer.

  1. Open the template and read Meta’s stated reason.
  2. Change the one thing the reason names, not the whole message.
  3. Fix sample values while you are in there, since they cost nothing.
  4. Resubmit and watch the status.
  5. If it fails twice, rewrite from the category up rather than editing again.

Frequently asked questions

How long does WhatsApp template approval take?

Usually a few minutes. Meta allows itself up to 24 hours, and templates flagged for manual review can take longer. If a template has sat pending for more than a day, it is almost always in manual review.

Can I edit a rejected WhatsApp template or must I create a new one?

You can edit and resubmit. For a rejection caused by variable placement or sample values, editing is right. For a category rejection, it is usually cleaner to rewrite the template properly than to keep editing around the problem.

Does a rejected template hurt my account?

A single rejection does not. A pattern of repeatedly resubmitting content Meta has already refused can attract closer review of your account, which slows every future approval.

Why did my template get approved but then paused later?

Approval and quality are separate. A template that is approved can still be paused if recipients block or report messages using it. That is a signal about the audience or the frequency, not about the wording.
