A text-only WhatsApp blast is a notification. An image with a button is an offer someone can act on without typing. The official WhatsApp Business API supports images, video, PDFs and tap buttons in bulk templates, and using them properly is the single biggest lift available over plain text.

Quick answer: A WhatsApp blaster on the official Meta API can send marketing templates with an image, video or PDF header, personalised text, and up to three quick-reply or two URL/call buttons, all approved once by Meta and costing the same per message as plain text. WappBlaster supports all of it at a flat ₹7,999 / $200 a year.

What rich-media templates are

A Meta-approved marketing template has up to four parts:

  • Header: text, or an image, video or document such as a PDF.
  • Body: the message, with personalisation variables filled per recipient.
  • Footer: a short line, commonly the opt-out instruction.
  • Buttons: quick replies that send a preset answer, or calls to action that open a URL or dial a number.

Unofficial blasters can attach a photo the way you would in a chat. They cannot do templates, buttons, per-recipient headers or delivery reports, and they carry the ban risk that comes with automating a consumer account.

Meta’s media rules, in short

  • Images: JPEG or PNG, about 5 MB max. Keep under 1 MB so it loads on mobile data.
  • Video: MP4, about 16 MB max. Short, with the point in the first three seconds.
  • Documents: PDF most common, about 100 MB max. Name the file what the customer will search for later.
  • Buttons: up to three quick replies, or up to two calls to action (URL, phone), within Meta’s current combination rules.
  • Approval: submit with a sample; once approved, swap the header media per campaign without re-approval if the format stays the same.
  • Cost: the same per message as text. Meta bills by category, not by media.

What actually gets tapped

Image + one URL button

One product, one price, one “Buy now”. The highest click-through shape for a single offer.

PDF catalogue + quick reply

For a range: the catalogue as the header, “Ask about a product” as the button, and a person or chatbot in the inbox to answer.

Video + call button

Property walkthroughs, demos, course previews, with “Call us” for the high-intent reply.

Personalised image

Tickets, certificates, report cards, the exact property they enquired about, generated per recipient from your data.

Setting it up

1
Build the template once: header type, body with variables, footer with opt-out, buttons. Submit with a sample image or PDF.
2
Map your list columns to the variables, and optionally to the header media so each recipient gets their own.
3
Route the buttons. Quick replies go to the chatbot or the shared inbox; URL buttons carry tracking so clicks show in the report.
4
Read delivered, read, replied and clicked per template, and A/B the header and the button label next time.

What it costs

  • Platform: ₹7,999 a year in India, $200 elsewhere. Rich-media templates, buttons, chatbot and inbox included.
  • Meta’s per-message charge: per marketing message, by country, the same with or without media, passed through at cost. Service replies inside the 24-hour window are free today and become billable from 1 October 2026 (details).

Frequently asked questions

Can a WhatsApp blaster send images and PDFs in bulk?

On the official WhatsApp Business API, yes: a marketing template can carry an image, a video or a document such as a PDF catalogue in its header, with personalised text below and buttons underneath. Unofficial blasters can attach files from your phone’s account but without templates, buttons or delivery reports, and at the usual ban risk.

Can I add buttons to a bulk WhatsApp message?

Yes, on the official API. Templates support quick-reply buttons, which send a preset reply when tapped, and call-to-action buttons that open a URL or place a phone call. Up to three quick-reply buttons or two call-to-action buttons, or a mix within Meta’s current limits. Buttons measurably lift reply and click rates over plain text.

What file sizes does WhatsApp allow in bulk messages?

Meta’s current limits are around 5 MB for images, 16 MB for video and 100 MB for documents, with JPEG and PNG for images, MP4 for video and PDF the most common document type. Keep images under 1 MB in practice so they load instantly on mobile data.

Do image and button templates need Meta approval?

Yes, like all marketing templates. You submit the template with a sample image or document and the button labels; Meta reviews it, usually within minutes to hours. Once approved, the header image or PDF can be swapped per campaign without re-approval as long as the format stays the same.

Does a rich-media message cost more than a text message?

No. Meta charges per message by category, marketing or utility, not by whether it has an image or buttons. A catalogue PDF with three buttons costs the same as a plain text marketing message to the same country.

Can each recipient get a different image?

Yes. The header media can be personalised per recipient from a column in your list, so a real-estate list can receive the property each person enquired about, or a school can send each parent their child’s report card. See personalised images at scale for the mechanics.

What converts better, an image or a PDF catalogue?

For one offer, an image with a single URL button. For a range, a PDF catalogue or a catalogue link, with a quick-reply button to ask a question. Video headers work for demos and property walkthroughs. Whatever the format, one clear button beats three competing ones.
