WhatsApp API conversation pricing India in brief

WhatsApp API conversation pricing in India describes a model that no longer exists: Meta retired the 24-hour conversation window as its billing unit on 1 July 2025, so three templates reaching one customer within an hour are now three separate charges. WappBlaster, an official WhatsApp Business API platform with a flat ₹7999 ($200) yearly fee, itemises the Meta portion by category and country without adding a per-message margin. The most concrete lever left to a sender is the category itself: marketing is India's highest rate and carries most bills, utility covers updates on something the customer started, such as an EMI due date, and authentication covers one-time passcodes. Meta reviews the category at submission, so a utility template containing Use code FESTIVE10 for 10% off is treated as marketing. Undelivered templates cost nothing, and messages to UAE or UK numbers are billed at those countries' rates. Free-form replies inside the customer service window are due to become billable from 1 October 2026, so one complete answer beats five short ones.

How does Meta charge for WhatsApp Business API messages in India now?

Since 1 July 2025 Meta bills every delivered template message individually, priced by template category and the receiving number's country, not per 24-hour conversation.

WappBlaster passes Meta's bill through itemised with no per-message margin, alongside its ₹7999 ($200) yearly platform fee.

  • Templates that fail to deliver are not charged.
  • Picking the right template category cuts the bill most.
  • Indian, UAE and UK numbers are priced differently.

WhatsApp API conversation pricing India benefits

  • Budgets that match the bill

Counting planned template messages by category gives the figure Meta will actually charge.

  • Savings from honest categories

Labelling order and EMI updates as utility, and only promotions as marketing, keeps templates approved and cheaper.

  • Early sight of OTP abuse

Authentication charges that run ahead of real logins flag a passcode attack rather than growth.

  • Charges split by country

Exporters and diaspora brands see what non-Indian numbers cost before the month closes.

  • Fewer paid reminders

Capping follow-ups to people who ignored an offer removes charges that bring nothing back.

  • Quotes you can audit

Requesting the provider’s own price and Meta’s portion on different lines exposes credit-pack margins.

Many Indian businesses still budget for WhatsApp as if Meta charged per 24-hour conversation, because that is how most older guides and provider quotes describe it. WappBlaster customers get a Meta bill built on a different model: since 1 July 2025, Meta charges for each template message that is delivered, priced by the template's category and the recipient's country. If your spreadsheet still counts conversations, it is counting the wrong thing.

Quick answer: Meta stopped billing WhatsApp Business API usage per conversation on 1 July 2025. Each delivered template message is now charged individually, at a rate set by its category (marketing, utility or authentication) and the country of the number receiving it. A template that fails to deliver is not charged. Rates for Indian numbers differ from those for UAE or UK numbers.

WhatsApp API pricing in India: from conversation windows to individual messages

Under the old model, the first template you sent opened a 24-hour conversation, and further messages in that window rode along at no extra charge. Sending three templates to a customer within a day cost roughly the same as sending one. That arithmetic no longer holds. Three delivered templates are now three charges, even if they reach the same person within an hour.

The practical effect for Indian senders is that the unit of cost is now the message you choose to send, which makes the bill easier to predict and easier to reduce. You know before a campaign goes out how many templates it contains and which category each one is in.

What decides a message's category in WhatsApp API pricing

CategoryUsed forIndian examples
MarketingPromotions, offers, launches, re-engagementDiwali sale, new collection, "we miss you" coupon
UtilityUpdates on something the customer already startedOrder dispatched, EMI due date, appointment confirmed
AuthenticationOne-time passcodesLogin OTP, payment verification code

Marketing is the highest-priced category in India, and it is where most of a typical bill sits. Meta reviews the category you choose when a template is submitted and can reassign it. A template labelled utility that contains "Use code FESTIVE10 for 10% off" will be treated as marketing, so trying to save money through mislabelling simply gets the template rejected or recategorised.

WhatsApp API replies inside the 24-hour conversation window

When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside it your team, bot or AI can reply free-form, without a template. For most of the per-message era those replies were not charged. Meta has announced that service messages become billable from 1 October 2026 at the utility-and-authentication rate for the market; our note on the October 2026 service message pricing change covers what is confirmed and what is still only reported. Either way, resolving a query in one complete reply costs less than spreading it over five short ones.

Reading an itemised WhatsApp API bill in India line by line

Ask any provider for two separate numbers: what the platform costs, and what Meta charged. WappBlaster's platform is a flat ₹7999 ($200) a year with no per-message margin, and every Meta charge appears itemised by category and country. When you review a month, check:

  1. Marketing messages delivered, split by campaign, so you can see which sends paid for themselves.
  2. Utility messages delivered, which should track your order or booking volume closely.
  3. Authentication messages, which should roughly match login or checkout attempts. A spike here can mean an OTP abuse problem, not growth.
  4. Messages to non-Indian numbers, which are priced at their own country's rate and often surprise exporters and diaspora-facing brands.

Levers that lower WhatsApp API pricing in India

  • Send fewer marketing templates to the same person. Every follow-up reminder to a person who ignored the first offer is another charge, so cap reminders per campaign.
  • Clean the list before a broadcast. Undelivered messages are not billed, but bad numbers and repeat non-responders drag down quality rating, which caps how many you can send.
  • Use segments. Sending a Jaipur store opening to buyers in Chennai is paying for messages nobody can act on.
  • Keep utility genuine. Accurate categories keep templates approved and costs predictable.

Where WhatsApp API provider pricing hides the real cost

Some providers sell "message credits" or wallet top-ups priced above Meta's rate, and the difference is their margin. That is not wrong in itself, but it becomes expensive at volume and makes the Meta portion impossible to audit. Others still quote per-conversation packages that do not match how Meta bills today. If a quote does not separate the platform fee from Meta's per-message charge, ask for it in writing before you sign. Limits of budgeting on WhatsApp API conversation pricing in India

  • If you send only a handful of utility templates each month, reworking categories to trim the Meta bill will save very little.
  • Rates for UAE or UK numbers differ from Indian ones, so a team messaging mostly abroad should not budget from India figures.

WhatsApp Business API Conversation Pricing in India: questions

Is WhatsApp still billed per conversation?

No. Since 1 July 2025 Meta charges for each delivered template message instead of a 24-hour conversation window. Budgets built on counting conversations now give the wrong figure; count the template messages you plan to deliver, by category.

Which message category costs the least?

Marketing templates carry the highest rate; utility and authentication templates are priced lower. Putting each template in its honest category is the biggest lever you control on the Meta bill, and Meta's current rate card is the place to check exact figures.

Does the platform add a markup on Meta’s rate?

Ours does not: Meta’s charges are passed through at cost. Many providers add a percentage or resell messages as "credits", which is why it is worth asking for the platform fee and the Meta rate separately.

Do prices differ by country?

Yes. Meta sets per-message rates by the recipient's country, so the same campaign to India and to the UK costs different amounts even at identical volume.

Are WhatsApp templates that fail to deliver charged?

No. Meta bills only templates that are delivered, so a message to an invalid or unreachable number costs nothing, though bad numbers still hurt the quality rating.

Do three WhatsApp templates to one customer in a day cost three times as much?

Yes, under the current model. The old 24-hour window let extra templates ride along free; now every delivered template is its own charge, even within the same hour.

Can I label a promotional template as utility to pay the lower rate?

It will not work. Meta reviews the category at submission and can reassign it, so a utility template carrying a discount code is treated as marketing or rejected.

Are replies inside the 24-hour window charged in India?

Yes. Meta's announcement puts them on the bill starting 1 October 2026, at the market's utility-and-authentication rate. Answering a query in one complete reply is therefore cheaper than five short ones.

Why would authentication messages suddenly spike on my bill?

They should roughly match login or checkout attempts. A sudden jump can point to OTP abuse rather than real growth, so it is worth investigating straight away.

What does WappBlaster add on top of Meta's per-message charges?

Only its own yearly platform fee of ₹7999 ($200), with no per-message margin, and every Meta charge appears on the bill itemised by category and country.
