Formula

  • India: Hourly basic rate = (Basic + DA) ÷ (working days × 8 hours).
  • India OT pay = OT hours × hourly rate × 2.
  • UAE: Hourly basic rate = Basic ÷ (working days × 8 hours), typically 30 days × 8 = 240 hours / month.
  • UAE weekday OT = OT hours × hourly rate × 1.25.
  • UAE weekend / public holiday OT = OT hours × hourly rate × 1.5.
  • UAE night OT (10 PM-4 AM) = OT hours × hourly rate × 1.5.

Worked example

Indian factory worker with Rs. 20,000 basic + DA, 26 working days × 8 hours = 208 hours / month. Hourly = 20,000 ÷ 208 ≈ Rs. 96. 12 hours OT at 2× = 12 × 96 × 2 = Rs. 2,304. UAE site engineer with AED 4,000 basic, 30 × 8 = 240 hours / month. Hourly = AED 16.67. 10 weekday OT hours at 1.25× = 10 × 16.67 × 1.25 = AED 208. 4 weekend OT hours at 1.5× = 4 × 16.67 × 1.5 = AED 100. Total OT = AED 308.

FAQ

OT Calculator — common questions

50 hours per quarter for adult workers under the central Factories Act 1948, with some states allowing up to 60-75 hours per quarter. Weekly limits are 12 hours and total work-hours (regular + OT) cannot exceed 60 per week.
Generally no — the Factories Act applies to workers, not supervisory or managerial staff (defined by role responsibilities, not just designation). Shops and establishment acts vary state-by-state.
Standard formula: (Basic + DA) ÷ (working days × daily hours). The 26 working days × 8 hours = 208 hours is the most common India base. UAE typically uses 30 days × 8 = 240 hours per month for OT computation.
No — OT is calculated on basic + DA (or basic + cost-of-living allowance in UAE), not on HRA, conveyance, special allowance or other components. This is statutory; some employers pay above-statute by policy.
1.5× the ordinary hourly rate for work on the official weekend (Friday or Saturday + Sunday depending on emirate / employer's published weekend) or public holidays declared by the UAE government.
During Ramadan, regular working hours are reduced by 2 hours/day per UAE Labour Law. Work beyond the reduced hours is OT at the standard 1.25× rate (1.5× on Friday / public holidays).
Yes — Factories Act caps and per-state variations are baked into the shift engine. Once a worker hits the cap, further OT requires explicit override with reason logged in the audit trail.
